Ong Oon Khuan:The man that wakes up PENANG FREE SCHOOL
It was after my school meeting I got myself heading to Kelly's dad wake at Farlim. After buying some fish, I handed it to my wife i was there by 5pm.Kelly was not there but her mom and her eldest daughter Pearly was there.
I extended condolences from me and my collegues to her and her family..Kelly has been selling drinks a the Penang Free School canteen ever since I was working there. She took over from her late dad a few years ago. When I was posted to Penang Free School in 2007.She was one of the first few friends I got to know there.
After seeing Kelly's mom .Pearly led me to the coffin. As I was not used to the Chinese custom I asked her what is required by me to do.She told me they would light up the joss stick and bow a few times at the coffin/picture.I did that and I asked the Lord to bless his soul and give him peace.
While I sat at the wake Pearly continued that they are doing the rituals in the Buddhist rite. It means that it doesnt involve meat and Taoism rituals.I could see the lotus motived decorated cloths and drappings. It was a hot sunny day.I could see my apartments across the road.
Pearly continued that her grandfather use to come to school as early as 4am.He would feed the cats and get on opening his drink stall. She told me that when the cats hears the noise of the bike, the would appear from nowhere for food. After he has given the food the cats dissappear. She also mentioned that Mr Ong's favourite pet at home was his dog Toffee. Pearly was toying with the thought of bringing the dog to the wake.
I see then Kak Ida (the nasi seller) comes. She wepts on seeing the face of Mr Oon.I m sure great memories of Mr Ong came flooding to her heart.
By then i saw the familiar Proton Saga approaching. It was Kelly. She came with her second daughter. And they brought their pet dog-Toffee.It was a cute white and brown patched dog. I greeted Kelly and expressed my condolonces. She told me she knows her father is at a better place now.Pearly and her second daughter took Toffee to have a glimpse at Mr Oon,
I see familiar figures coming that is Farouk and Pak Ya. I could see from here besides the teachers and support staff ,the canteen stall people are another important group of people linking to the school.By providing the avenue to recharge their body the student gets to continue their day at PFS with energy attained from food/drinks sold by the canteen stall operators.
As I was munching away the rambutans brought by Kelly from her house, the second daughter asked me whether I have seen ghosts at Penang Free School. I said no. I asked her did your grandfather seen one?
She told me that her Grandfather said 'Penang Free School is like my home, why would I be scared even if I see one'
I guess this sums up Mr Ong.Only dedication and passion can turn your workplace into a home. I am sure he has seen countless students passing through the doors of Penang Free School. He has quenched the thirst of many students and teachers.Likewise God has quenched Mr Ong with an everlasting peace.MAY GOD BLESS HIS SOUL
